Christian Effective Charity Campaign
EA for Christians is proud to support the Christian Effective Charity Campaign, a joint venture between EA for Christians and One for the World. The goal of the campaign is to raise money in the name of Jesus to care for the poor and the sick around the world.
We rely on GiveWell, the leading evaluator of global poverty charities, to identify top charities whose programmes achieve a very high impact with every pound they receive. GiveWell’s top charities list changes over time, based on evidence of programmes’ effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, room for additional funding and transparency.
The charities supported by the campaign are selected based on their huge impact on poverty and health, without regard to faith affiliation, so they may be new to donors who prefer to give to churches or Christian-operated charitable programs. But as a Christian organisation itself, EA for Christians provides oversight of this campaign, to ensure that selected charities are appropriate within a Christian worldview, and gives guidance to donors in any difficult cases. By giving through this campaign, donors give God the credit for the good their donations will achieve, while exercising good stewardship by selecting the most efficient charitable programs.
The campaign uses One for the World’s existing payments infrastructure, and all proceeds go to the selected charities (net of any credit card or third party processing fees, which would otherwise be paid by the charities if you gave directly). Giving via the campaign also helps EA for Christians understand the growth of our movement and the impact of its own ministry.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus encourages us to “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”, but also says “when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets … to be honoured by others”. A gift via the campaign lets us give as a community honouring God, rather than as individuals, and strikes us as a good way to respect both of these precepts.
Our hope is that a robust response to this campaign will demonstrate to the world both God’s heart for the poor, and also the compatibility of Christian faith with a thought process driven by reason and evidence.
